Larry and I worked together at Gourmet in the late 80"s and early 90's. Those were very special years at the magazine, and Larry was the one we all looked up to. AFter all these years, I am now back at Gourmet, and think about our sales team from those days with renewed admiration. Larry was one of a kind, and I learned a lot from him. My deepest sympathies on your loss. We will miss him.

Dear Charlene:

Larry was a great guy and a great salesman. The first part you know better than anyone else.
In sales you can get people taking a lot of time telling you why they didn't get the business.
Larry would always call and in a few words tell us how he snagged some big new order.
Detroit was always important to Gourmet and Larry made Gourmet important to Detroit.
I have very fond memories of the dinners at your house when the boys were little, and of course of the big annual wine parties.
I will always think warmly of Larry.
God bless you and the boys!

Dear Char, Chris and Matt,

God never created a more positive man with such an amazing will to fight so many obstacles. We feel blessed to know Larry and we are so thrilled our kids have become so close through the years. Larry was a wonderful role model for anyone who knew him. He will be so missed by anyone who knew him.
Hopefully very soon the wonderful memories of Larry will erase the tough times all of you faced together. Our prayers and thoughts are with all of you.

Lots of love,

Chuck and Carol

Larry and I worked together while he was at GOURMET. A kind guy, a fun person, someone I recall showing me how to handle Las Vegas the first time I was there, and how to enjoy a steak. He was a great man. I am saddened by this news.

Larry was one of a kind. We worked together at Gourmet magazine. I remember once he invited me to his house for dinner (this was maybe 1989) with Char and the boys. Larry walked into the living room with me a few steps behind and Matt yelled "is the man here yet?" .. The irony is i always felt that Larry was THE MAN especially in Detroit. I guess the moral is Larry was always prepared and so was everyone around him.

Larry used to throw this gigantic champagne tasting at Cranbrook every year. It got so well known that even Jack Smith CEO of GM would attend. Jack would come in and give Larry a hug and say this is the one event we always make our schedule around.

Larry is a hero, an American hero...there is so much of him that will live on is all of us...

Godspeed Wallaces everywhere.
lots of love and prayers

Dear Wallace family:
You are in our thoughts and prayers. I had the honor to work along side Larry at Gourmet, the Magazine of Good Living, from 1993 to 1997. Larry was the consumate Gentleman and Professional. ( As it turns out, he had also known and had very kind words about my Uncle, Steve Carroll, who sold for Time Magazine in years prior.) Because Larry worked in Detroit and I in NYC, our contact was limited to sales meetings --our big annual get together sales meetings (where he would be tapping away on his laptop!) and his wonderful contributions to our weekly Wednesday AM sales meetings. He was such a creative seller and his letters always contained his trademark impassioned and eloquent close..went something like " no other magazine lives so well, works so effectively or delivers so much as the Magazine of Good Living." Of course, this meant that Larry got the sale, everytime-- in good times, and in lean times. He was one in a million and loved by millions! In closing, no other Man delivered so much, worked so effectively or lived and loved his family and his work so well as Larry Wallace. He is in our hearts and prayers, as are all of you.

With my and my family's love, and that of all of his fellow/brother soldiers in the ad sales trenches,

I am so sad to hear of Larry's passing. I loved doing parties in Detroit - Larry was awesome to work with. It's been at least 15 years since I left Gourmet and I still think of Larry. Charlene, my condolences to you and your family...

Larry was so kind to everyone he met. He was a consumate professional and he stood up for what he believed in and felt was right. The advertising business is a sadder place without him. My thoughts are with you all.

I worked with Larry during my time at both Gourmet Magazine (Conde Nast) and Autoweb.com. I knew Larry as a great guy, a great salesman, a gentleman and one of my favorite storytellers. He was one of the best and he will be missed.

Dear Charlene,

Here is a poem I would like to share:

Grieving Time, a Time for Love

If a loved one has departed,
And left an empty space,
Seek the inner stillness,
Set a slower pace.

Take time to remember,
Allow yourself to cry,
Acknowledge your emotions,
Let sadness pass on by.

Then center in the oneness,
Remember...God is here,
Death is but a change in form,
Your loved one is still near.

Treat yourself with kindness,
Allow yourself to feel,
God will do the mending,
And time will help you heal.

I feel saddened that I didn't get to know Larry better. The few times we did meet and talk, I really enjoyed. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved his family dearly. Whenever he spoke of family, his face would light up and there was a twinkle in his eye, especially about you, Charlene. A wonderful man who will be missed.
