Guestbook for John A. Conde Showing 1 - 14 of 14 entries.

We have John to thank for preservation of the Overland and Willys Overland Archive material prior to 1940. AMC was going to destroy their history, and John went directly to Roy Chapin to obtain permission to donate the materials to the enthusiast club that houses them today (33 years later). I have also visited the University of Wyoming American Heritage collection where he donated historic material.

Although I never met John, I have many acquaintences that did, and they assured me he was a very fine gentleman.

May God Bless.

I remember meeting Mr.John Conde & his grandson at the 1989 AMO meet in St.Louis,Mo..It was the usual hot summer day and John was selling his automotive litreature out of a cool hotel room. His book "The Family Albun" was purchased by me & shared with many others over the years & John was kind enough to answer all of my questions for over an hour. I'll never forget him & the knowledge he had of the automobile industry.
Thank you for sharing him with us & my deepest sympathy on your families loss. He was a very special person & I'm honored that i got to know him.

John was a fascinating man with a deep and abiding love of auto history.

He had a front row seat to that history as a public relations exec who watched Nash merge with Hudson to form American Motors which later bought the Jeep brand.

We're lucky to have a lot of that history. After John retired from AMC in 1976, he wrote many articles for a variety of auto history magazines. (I hope someone collects his stories someday.)

In addition, he allowed me into his house in 2000 to interview him extensively about his Nash/AMC career. Someday, I hope I can find a way to share these six hours of interviews with car fans.

John almost singlehandedly preserved the history of American Motors even when the company itself didn't care about its past. He once told me that former AMC President Bill Luneberg called him "the company's greatest used car salesman" for his efforts to preserve materials about AMC's past.

In fact, he was allowed to take a lot of that material with him when he retired. The sale of publicity photos and rare product literature helped fund his retirement years.

John was a complex character. On the surface, he could sometimes be curt and irritable. However, he could also be generous and kind. If he sensed your motives were in the interest of helping someone or preserving auto history, he was always very selfless and giving.

John lived through some fascinating times in the auto industry, and we're lucky that he chronicled and catalogued them vividly and prodigiously.

Thanks, John. I'm going to miss you. You're one for the history books.

Thank you to John's family for sharing this man with the car community. For those of us who love classic cars, he was a treasured resource. The automobile community has truly lost a great.

Certainly my thoughts are with the Conde family as they remember John.
My thoughts are mostly with Cam and of the late Jeff as I recall
them as junior high school students
many years ago.

They were children who were gifted
with a special spirit, one that was
undoubtedly willed to them by their dad.

I wish them well. Certainly my sympathy is extended to the family.

John Condi was the the official "Town Crier" for the Town Hal committee. This group of men was open to all company individuals interested in the progress and welfare of AMC. I was chaieman one year and recall that John was always prepasred with the latest company news and forthcoming events whether they be the automotive side or or our great partners at Kelvinator.

John's passing is a great loss to the old car hobby. His many contributions will be a lasting legacy. I enjoyed "talking Packard" with John at Hershey and Perrysburg. On behalf of The Packard Motor Car Foundation we extend our deepest condolences to the Conde family.

I met John in 1986 at the Hershey swap meet, and saw him at various meets until he retired a few years ago. I must have purchased hundreds of photos from him that were used in The Packard Club’s publications. He was a great fellow and invaluable to the old car hobby.

If the measure of a persons life is the number of persons they touched in positive ways, John's life was full indeed. I met John through my father, and grew to love the conversations we had regarding automobiles and life in general, I will miss him indeed.
