It is with heavy and saddened hearts we inform you of the passing of Thomas V. Angott, Sr., Chairman of C.F. Burger Creamery and beloved patriarch of the Angott family, on September 11, 2008, at the age of 82.
Starting as a youth working at the family dairy founded by his father, then known as the Detroit Pure Milk Co./Farm Maid Dairy, Tom immersed himself completely into a job to which he would devote his entire life. His career was interrupted by WWII, serving in the 8th Air Force crewing B-17 bombers. Shot down after flying dozens of successful missions, he was captured by the Nazis, escaped his imprisonment with the aid of the local resistance forces, and served as a commando in the Dutch Underground forces for the remainder of the war. Upon his return from the war he simultaneously resumed both his formal education and his career, later assuming the roles of President, Chief Executive, and Chairman. Together with his brother Larry, Chairman and CEO, countless acquisitions and growth over the last 50 years created the successful family company of C.F. Burger Creamery/Twin Pines Farm Dairy, now in its third generation of family management. His leadership skills always in demand, over the years he Chaired or served on the Board of nearly every major dairy association, among them the National Dairy Council, United Dairy Industry Association, Milk Industry Foundation, and the Michigan Dairy Foods Association. Always looking towards the betterment of the lives of others, he also devoted himself to countless charities, civic involvement on every level, and the Church. Highlighting his distinguished career outside of business, he served as Detroit Fire Commissioner in the 1960's and 70's, and commanded the city's firefighting forces during the civil riots of 1967. He served on commissions or delegations for 4 Michigan Governors and 5 U.S. Presidents, including an agricultural exchange mission behind the Iron Curtain to Red China at the direction of President Carter prior to the establishment of formal diplomatic relations with the U.S., and in the 1980's served on a civilian delegation in the war-torn Middle East to supervise the safe and orderly withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon.
In his lifetime, Tom served as Chairman, President, Regent or Director to seven universities and colleges, eight hospitals and medical centers, over 100 charities, including the Pontifical Missionaries of P.I.M.E., the Boy's Town of Italy for orphans, Legatus Catholic Business Leadership, the Goodfellows Old Newsboys charity for underprivileged children. One look at his photo walls or scrapbooks reveals the magnitude of relationships he had with some the most influential people in business and industry, the arts, politics and the world: Mother Theresa, John Paul II, Luciano Pavarotti, Sophia Loren, Lee Iaccoca, Henry Ford II, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush , George W. Bush, and countless other lives that touched and were touched by him.
Together with his first wife Mary Jo, who preceded him in death, and his wife Nancy, he raised 12 children, 26 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
For his outstanding character, compassionate beneficence, brilliant mind and guiding hand, he will be greatly missed, not only by his loving family and friends, but the world. When we thought we had risen to know more and see further, we realized we were merely standing on the shoulders of a giant.
Beloved husband of Nancy and the late Mary Jo.
